Interfaces of the present

Since the Washington Post made an iPad app too, I think it’s both the time to elaborate on interfaces and the time to admit, that the change is surely coming. The dying press industry can actually revive with this new medium, which is good because we need well written content. There’s nothing wrong with amateur bloggers, but the most valuable content is and will always be made by professional writers and journalists. So now we have the chance to try those out because the new york times, washington post and newsweek all made really nice applications that bring the press to the new medium. And of course they will also be available on other tablets when they finally come out. And that leads to a conclusion that there’s another change in interfaces coming.

Apparently a click to view interface doesn’t really work with press on a tablet. No, every one of the magazines has swiping motion to change pages / browse through articles. People don’t like to point and click, they like to browse. And what’s more natural than a swiping motion? Right!

And since the tablets are slowly taking over, we might want to consider websites that are also navigated that way (or can be navigated with both regular and modern touch controls). That might lead to a regression of thought, because we’re actually coming back to the system that was dominant before the PC revolution. And this system is already catching on. So it might either be a case of nostalgia, or simply a way to do it right. And if it’s the latter we should consider that with all of our feature layouts.

Below you can see the AD for washington post, pretty funny, especially the last sentence ;)

Make your own font.

Well not exactly “make” but it’s more of an exercise to better understand the relations between letters and it also helps a bit in future logo creation. I made this one by taking the letter “o” from Arial Black and then cutting into it, modifying the edges and such, to create a whole typeface. This is not a finished piece as some of the letters need a little tweaking, but it’s surely getting there. Go on, try and make a font yourself!

Facebook makes changes (again)

Facebook has announced on their recent conference that they’re adding some new features to their mobile apps. They are on 200 million mobile devices which is pretty impressive (and nearly on every single iphone) but I’m not sure the direction they’re heading is the right one.

Adding “deals” into “facebook places” gives us – well, deals – and that’s fine, we pay less for goods or services and we can be all thankful for it, right ? Well normally we would, but there’s this one little tiny detail that’s a little “wrong” here. The question “why?”. Sure the easy answer would be – to keep the #1 position in light of the recent myspace changes, but the real reason I think is a little different. “Places” itself tell facebook a lot of things about it’s users and now knowing which deals they used will actually make tham know anything but our thoughts. At least until there’s an app for that.

Sure many users don’t really mind because we’re being controlled all the time by governments and corporations, but I think some people don’t like others to know where they are. I never pay with a credit card at a club, maybe it’s my personal paranoia – but I will be turning the “Places” feature off. Along with the deals. At least most of the time. Keeping it constantly on would lead to even better advertising, tailored directly to us.

But we’ll see where it all leads after a few years anyway. Hopefully it won’t lead to <a href=”http://www.bp.com”> a disaster </a>. But we all know how facebook is when it comes to “privacy”.

Flash vs html5 pong fight!

All of those comparisons between html5 and flash could give anybody but batman a headache. Good to know that someone with a sense of humor decided to make their clash a bit more “fun” than numbers, predictions and angry “thoughts on flash”. As with every technology, things have their advantages and disadvantages. And true, HTML5 is better battery-to-performance-wise, but Flash has some pretty cool tricks up it’s sleeve too. And even if the web moves away from flash video completely (which it has started to do) there will still be plenty of use for flash – gaming, “creative” showcase type websites and cartoons for which it is perfect.

The cool people at Code Computerlove decided to make a pong game (for two players) that uses FLASH to render one side of the table, and HTML5 to render the other. And they work together in harmony. Maybe it’s a hint towards the future? Huh, Steve?

You can check out the game and play it here. Enjoy!

The web is moving away from Flash

Many people were skeptical at first about the Flash VS html5 war, but it seems like HTML5 has already won, as after 6 months from apple’s decision to ban flash, HTML5 has now over half of the online video. Which leads to a simple conclusion, that in a year we won’t be seeing flash all that often. Maybe it’s start to learn some new tools?

Myspace transforming into My “[ ]”

A few years ago myspace was the online king nearing 200 million users. Then along came facebook with all it’s drama (see “the social network”) and change all that. People stopped using myspace as if it was a bag of worms. And we can all bet that myspace advertisers felt that, and myspace CEO’s felt that too. So they decided to change, and what’s better than a really BIG change? Nothing. So they decided to change the site from the ground up, including the very familiar logo they had. We’ll see if it’s gonna steal the users back from facebook or is it just one more try of a dying company. Nevertheless the move is pretty bold so good luck to Tom! Below you can see how it’s rougly gonna look like in november.

Photoshop quick tip #2 – clone stamp tool

Sure we now have a content aware fill in photoshop and it works well for removing small elements from a surface, like wrinkles on the skin and such. But it’s still good to use the Clone Stamp tool (S key) to retouch some things by hand. We all know that, but some people recently asked me – why is this a good way if you can’t really undo it after you save the psd ? Well that’s not entirely true and this info is mostly for those people. It’s such a big piece of software that sometimes there are options that are easily overlooked. If you’re retouching a photograph you can create a layer on top of it, and in the Clone Stamp tool’s options change the sampling mode to current layer and below, so the changes will appear only on the new layer. That makes it easier to revert to the original if you ever choose so.

Canstruction – charity and art come together!

It’s always great when charities involve artists into a cooperation that’s both creative and helpful to some. This time it’s about people arranging canned foods together to form an image or a sculpture. Hence the name “canstruction”. And since I love the idea I decided to share some “Canstructions” with you.

Photoshop quick tip #1 : Autoalign of elements

Many of us might actually miss that because it’s not an option often used in tutorials online and the “snap to objects” function is used quite a lot in photoshop as well. But let’s imagine we have a couple of text fields and we want to align them vertically or horizontally together. Well we can do that with a set of these tools, the icons should be pretty much self-explanatory as it allows you to either align the baselines or centers of objects and it shows which kind of alignment each icon represents. Go and try those out!

New York Times iPad app updated

Finally the New York Times has realised that people expect a little more from ipad news apps than a sort-of website version. Following in the footsteps of flipboard – which by the way has set new standards in the industry – it’s easy to use and well designed.

Those changes and an evolution of interfaces towards the touch can a very well be the main reasons for the apps to steal more market from their paper counterparts and save some trees.

Now it’s time for a flipboard style app that let’s you add blogs of your choice frokm wordpress and other types. And a creation machine app would be nice too, right ? ;)
