Well not exactly “make” but it’s more of an exercise to better understand the relations between letters and it also helps a bit in future logo creation. I made this one by taking the letter “o” from Arial Black and then cutting into it, modifying the edges and such, to create a whole typeface. This is not a finished piece as some of the letters need a little tweaking, but it’s surely getting there. Go on, try and make a font yourself!

Being personal with your music – beautiful hand-made cover designs!
Here’s what I’ve stumbled upon today, a beautiful selection of handmade covers and packages for music that doesn’t needs 10,000 copies. Share and enjoy!
First ever iPhone 4 music video
It was pretty obvious that when the new iPhone came out with it’s 720p HD video someone would make a music video using just the phone. That someone is a one man band (and the guy who shot and edited it) called Flakjakt and the video came out pretty nice. So as I expected there will now be a stream of good quality (and bad quality) videos for bands, projects, short movies shot while drunk etc. This one was edited (in Final Cut, not the built in iMovie) and there are some color changes added, but overall it looks interesting and very retro like.
mobile creativity
The new iphone is out and aside from the fact whether you like it or not it does bring one thing that is truly revolutionary. And it’s not the hires screen.
Think about it – having a 720p camera in your pocket and imovie to edit it on the go will break apple’s own division of mobile products being only for consuming media while computers being the tools to create.
This changes everything because the best camera is the one you have with you, and using free time (like on a bus) to edit it will result of more creative things done “in the moment”.
And higher quality plus having your tools with you all the time is the path towards better digital media and perhaps youtube 3.0
Exciting times since now all other phone makers will make a video editing app and the trend will spread.
Also expect more virals ;)
Krop Video
We have made a video for one of Krop songs and it turned out pretty fun. Enjoy:
We’ve used a Flip Ultra HD for recording, a lot of takes and put it all together in iMovie 06 (because 06 is actually pretty good). Then we applied a 60% sepia filter and some contrast / brightness tweaks to achieve that result. Watch in HD!

Pixelmator tutorial – emboss and brushed metal
Here’s a quick little tutorial on how to create an emboss + brushed metal + some fire effect in pixelmator. This will actually work in photoshop as well since the tools used are the same (even the same keyboard shortcuts). So if you’re a photoshop user feel free to also try it.
So here we go :

Free textures stock database
That’s right. I’ve decided to give away for FREE the collection of texture photos that I took over the years. Some were taken with the phone, some with a DSLR. The quality is different in them, but they’re all useable for either 3d modelling, or compositions in photoshop. Head down to TEXTURES and check those out. Don’t forget to donate if you really like them. And if you want full resolution contact me and we’ll arrange something for as low as 3$ for the full resolution one (2500×1600 or higher). Currently all the 900×650 textures are completely free for both commercial and non-commercial use. It’d be nice if you link to this site though.
Pixelmator tutorial : making a promo visual
Here’s a little tutorial for pixelmator, since I’m working on some new visuals for the upcoming second promo EP from Krop. So let’s start shall we ? All you need for this tutorial are basic pixelmator or photoshop skills, a copy of pixelmator, about 20 minutes and a photo of a person. I used one of the promo pics from Krop. Read more for the tutorial itself. If any of the images is too small for you, you can right click on it, and choose view image opening it in it’s full. This release is an upcoming one, but if you like electronic dance music with an alternative twist check out the last cd at kropband.com . It’s a free download.

Think before you design
I recently give a lot of thought to two things: usability of a project (be it a website) and creative communication so the ideas are easy to grasp/read for a majority of readers. The time of “pweety weebsites” is over. It’s time for thinking at least as much as the design process itself. Think what you want to say in a claim, before you type it and add a dropshadow. Analyze other successful projects and copy only what you think is important. And by that I dont mean the 30 layer header background. If it’s a business don’t add people in business suits, unless it’s the suits you’re selling. This is so overused now that for a business to stand out it just takes to come up with something different.
Think about mobile use, it’s growing at an unbelievable rate, you don’t want to be the last on the wagon do you?
And remember that form and function should be equal without one praying on the other!
Textures are designers daily bread
Well in many cases they are. Maybe not if you’re into minimal style graphics with just white background and solids, but for all of us that like to do stuff as bitmap as possible textures sure come in handy.
3d modellers would also love some new additions to their texture library. That’s why I’d like to recommend to you a great website that’s all about free textures. Go check out CG Textures !
Space’y design + Pixelmator
A while ago I designed the cover artwork for the “Krop” music project. The idea was to be as “from outer space” as possible, and at the same time have some of that 80’s look to it. Since that’s the decade the aliens came to earth anyway.
I used pixelmator pixelmator a 59$ photoshop wanna-be app for the Mac. It’s faster than the big brother, has a lot of the same tools (some stuff is lacking but we can’t have everthing for 59$, right?) and is pretty easy to use. If you own a mac and want to have a cheap photoshop alternative go give it a try.
I used a lot of duplicates of the character with different blurs and color settings + some painting over with a rainbow gradient and masks.
Then some noise with low opacity was added to give it a feel of the 80’s even more. I will also be in charge of the music videos to follow, so I guess it’ll also be about similar effects there too.
Go check it all out at kropband.com
Amazing underground/subway architecture
Amazing subway photography. Too bad most of the subways are so dull and boring, but as we can see here it doesn’t have to be this way. More photos after the break, and on this Link Continue reading
Nostalgia route : Space Invaders
Logan Walters has put together an awesome compilation of modified space invaders. My favorite is of course Homer ;) It brought back a lof of memories of crouching by an old atari computer, with a cassette game still loading, avoiding sudden moves or it might not load, and then shooting furiously at those pixelated sprites. They had more soul than many new, naturally rendered characters in modern games. Those were the days …
The modifications after the break.
